Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

On August 7th, NJCDC hosted the second annual Rutgers University Governor’s School Engineering and Technology Event. The event was open to any Paterson youth aged thirteen and above, and was attended by students from Garrett Morgan Academy and the Great Falls Teen Center. Students work together on creating a foam roller coaster. The Governor’s School is a competitive, rigorous pre-college engineering program that invites students from throughout the state to live at Rutgers during the summer before their senior year of high school. The staff for the event was comprised of alumni of the Governor’s School, including past and present Garrett Morgan Academy students.

At the event, participants were divided into groups and competed against each other in the construction of foam roller coasters, bridges, and houses made out of everyday household items. They also experimented with chemical reactions and exploding soda bottles, and learned and how to control electronic devices through computer commands. The other team prepares their own foam roller coaster. Each group had Governor School staff guiding them throughout the activities and had to present their finished projects to the rest of the groups at the end of the event. The students took their bridge and house projects home with them, and an additional Governor’s School event is being planned for October.
