NJCDC LAUNCHES NEW “FIX-IT” VOLUNTEER REPAIR SERVICE FOR PATERSON’S SENIORS

fixit1NJCDC hosted a kick-off celebration introducing “Fix-It: Paterson’s Volunteer Repair Service” program on April 23rd. The event took place at 162 Gould Avenue in Paterson at the home of the program’s first client.
The Fix-It Program utilizes a crew of dedicated volunteers who perform minor household maintenance and repairs for low-income senior citizens and individuals with disabilities. Fix-It volunteers, some of whom are retirees, provide services without charge; the only cost to the client is for parts necessary to complete the repair. fixit3Examples of Fix-It’s services include: installing grab bars and railings, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors; repairing leaky faucets or toilets, replacing broken door locks, replacing light bulbs, fixing broken lamps and switches, and replacing existing electric outlets and switches.

Fix-It’s services are provided primarily to those who own their own homes. Services can be provided to apartment dwellers as long as the repairs are limited to personal items only and the task is not one that should be provided by the landlord.

Bob Guarasci, NJCDC’s Founder and CEO, led the ceremony along with Paterson Mayor Jose “joey” Torres. Funding for the program is provided through the City of Paterson CDBG allocation. Additional contributions will come from the Jerry Speziale Foundation and an objective of the program is to obtain product discounts through Lowe’s and Home Depot.

Questions about the program can be directed to Giselle Gonzalez at (973) 413-1622 or ggonzalez@njcdc.org.
