Students Rally for the Great Falls
Friday, August 26th, 2011
Paterson, NJ—Public service and civic responsibility are two important values held by members of the Paterson Great Falls Youth Corps (GFYC), and on August 20, 2011, approximately 30 GFYC members exercised their first amendment rights as they organized a rally in support of the Great Falls National Park.
The demonstration began at City Hall where 200 spectators assembled in support of America’s newest national park—Paterson’s own Great Falls National Historical Park. While at City Hall, Mayor Jeff Jones and Councilman Andre Sayegh addressed the crowd. Following the mayoral address, a GFYC student dressed as Alexander Hamilton—one of America’s Founding Fathers and the founder of Paterson—led the rally down Market Street and over into the Great Falls National Park.
The purpose of the march was to bring awareness to the park, to educate the population about the history and significance of the Great Falls, and to garner support to ensure the future success of the park. While marching, handmade signs read “We Rise for Our Falls”, “Paterson Pride is Alive” and “We Want Our Park”—all indicative of the high level of community support for the new national park. The rally ended with a celebration in Mary Ellen Kramer Park with food and a jazz ensemble.
The GFYC is dedicated to the launch of the park, and will do everything necessary to ensure its success. On Friday, August 26th, 2011 the GFYC will host the 3rd annual community cleanup of the Great Falls.
