New CEO Curtis PalmoreThe Community Charter School of Paterson (CCSP), the K-8 charter school founded by NJCDC in 2008, is thrilled to welcome Curtis Palmore as its new CEO.

Curtis said, "I came to the Community Charter School of Paterson because I believe in this organization and I believe in the team members, amazing students, families, and partners within this school. I knew there was no better school to join if I wanted to make a difference. This is the very same inspiration that continues to drive me over the two plus decades of my work in education."

Curtis grew up in the Bronx but Paterson has been his second home, as his mother is a Paterson native and many of his aunts and cousins live here. He has fond memories of playing stickball and tag on Beech Street with his cousins and their friends, and of volunteering with his family at Solid Rock Baptist Church.

Curtis holds a bachelor's degree from Morgan State University and master's degrees in Educational Leadership and Administration from Fordham University and Columbia University. He began his teaching career twenty-three years ago in Washington Heights, while completing his two-year commitment with Teach for America, which he was inspired to join after volunteering in college as a reading tutor at a local elementary school.

He joins CCSP from Exceed Charter School in Brooklyn, where he served as Founding Principal for five years. In the school's first two years, students' academic performance increased by 26.7% in English Language Arts and 55.8% in Math on state exams. In addition, during Curtis' last academic school year as the Lower School and Middle School Assistant Principal at Beginning with Children Charter School in Brooklyn, his academic leadership helped to achieve 83% of scholars in 3rd through 8th grades reaching proficiency and/or advancement on the New York State English and Math Exams and 93% of fourth grade scholars reaching proficiency and/or advanced scores on the New York State Science Exam.

For the last two months, Curtis has been working with Mark Valli, CCSP's former CEO, CCSP Board President Mike Powell, and NJCDC CEO Bob Guarasci, who is CCSP's Lead Founder, to ensure a smooth transition. And over the summer, CCSP's academic leadership teams have been working hard to accomplish two major goals: unifying as a team and providing pre-service training to teachers and support staff; and setting systems and structures in place to have a solid strategic plan and strong curriculum resources for the upcoming school year.

Curtis said, "Our strategic plans are making headway and we look forward to sharing these plans and intended outcomes with the entire team in the near future. Thanks to the efforts of many of our teachers, supervisors, and coaches, we are moving in the right direction with our curriculum resources."

He continued, "I am here because we have unparalleled capability to make an impact. Both students and families in Paterson deserve the very best and I believe we can provide them with the best education. To paraphrase a quote from Oscar Wilde — we need to believe in the impossible and remove the improbable."

Board President Mike Powell offered his observation that "Curtis is going to ensure we continue our trajectory of progress, and provide strong leadership to ensure that CCSP will remain an invaluable community asset."
