NJCDC Casino NightSecond Casino Night a Resounding Success

On March 3, 2017 NJCDC held our Second Annual Casino Night to support Paterson's next generation of college graduates. The evening was a resounding success, raising over $25,000 to help make college graduation a reality for Paterson high school students.

Over 150 people filled the ballroom at The Brownstone to enjoy not only a night of casino gaming and a decadent dinner, but also a night of giving back. When not indulging in a variety of hors d'oeuvres, as well as lavish buffet and dessert tables, guests gambled at blackjack, craps, roulette, and Texas Hold'Em tables.

NJCDC Casino NightAt the end of the night, our guests exchanged their casino chips for raffle tickets. They then placed their raffle tickets in bowls directly in front of the prizes they desired. While not everyone won one of the 15 amazing raffle prizes--which included tickets to Rangers and Devils games, Tumi luggage, and gift certificates for everything ranging from facials and massages to dinner and the movies--everyone left knowing they made a difference for Paterson youth.

In Paterson, graduating from college is rare--only 7% of adults living in Paterson's Great Falls Neighborhood, the neighborhood NJCDC serves, have earned their bachelor's degree, and 90% of residents who are at least 25 years old only have a high school degree or less. Those that have a high school degree or less are twice as likely to be unemployed, and if they are employed, earn half the salary of those with college degrees.

NJCDC Casino NightNJCDC works tirelessly to change these depressing statistics by exposing students to college as early as preschool--making college an expectation and not an exception. This year alone we hosted our own college fair within the City, held a five-part college acceptance workshop, provided $25,000 of college scholarships, took multiple programs on college tours, and so much more.

The money we raised from this year's Casino Night will be used for college scholarships; out-of-state college tours (during which students will visit college campuses, learn about opportunities in higher education, and experience campus life); a College Send-Off ceremony in the spring celebrating high school seniors who will be attending four-year colleges in the fall; and the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Youth Recognition Awards Ceremony, celebrating those young people making a difference in Paterson.NJCDC Casino Night

NJCDC's CEO Bob Guarasci said, "Thank you to our sponsors, raffle prize donors, and everyone who attended for making our Second Annual Casino Night a great success. The money we raised will help us make college graduation the expectation for the 8,000 children living or going to school in Paterson's Great Falls Neighborhood."
