Call for Nominations for the PYC’s Annual Dr. MLK Youth Recognition Awards

December 19, 2023

Every day, Paterson youth are accomplishing extraordinary things — and this is your chance to let us know about Silk City teens that are making their community a better place for all.

If you know young people dedicated to serving their community, please submit your nominations for the Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Youth Recognition Awards, which recognize Paterson's most deserving young people. Awards will be given by our Paterson Youth Council (PYC) on Monday, January 15 — Dr. Martin Luther King Day — at The Brownstone. Nominations are due by Friday, January 5.

The PYC, facilitated by NJCDC, is a citywide youth-led and youth-driven civic program that has represented Paterson teens since 2006. This year-long leadership development program is designed to create the next generation of community leaders and advocates by building confidence, skills, and knowledge in areas ranging from education to the arts to the environment.

In addition to meeting with city leaders, discussing a variety of issues that affect them and their peers, and volunteering in Paterson, the members also sponsor numerous special events throughout the year. One of these events is the Youth Recognition Awards Breakfast.

The PYC believes that the holiday honoring Dr. King is the appropriate time to recognize Paterson's most committed and community-minded young people — and the adults who help them. On MLK Day, the PYC will recognize several youth, an adult, and an elected official who have made a difference in Paterson through their commitment to the ideals and virtues espoused by Dr. King. One youth-serving organization will also be recognized.

But first, we need your help to identify those deserving of these awards. Please use this Nomination Form to nominate at least one individual or organization (see Cover Letter for details). Your nominations will bring much-deserved attention to the impact of Paterson's promising young people, adults, and youth-serving organizations.

Please feel free to share the Nomination Form and distribute it as widely as possible.

Nominations must be received no later than Friday, January 5 by email or mail. If you have any questions, please contact David Gelman at

We hope you will participate and nominate one or more individuals and/or youth-serving organizations you believe are deserving of this honor!
