NJCDC and Community Charter School of Paterson Celebrate Read Across America Day with Community Leaders

March 3, 2023

Every year, in honor of Dr. Seuss' birthday—March 2nd—schools and nonprofits throughout the country celebrate Read Across America Day, a nationwide reading motivation and awareness event that calls for every child in every community to celebrate the joy of reading. Read Across America Day is one of the many ways NJCDC works to promote early childhood literacy.

Throughout the morning, more than 50 community and corporate volunteers who were eager to read rejoiced in this opportunity to share some of their favorite books with our students! Our readers included Superintendent Eileen Shafer, Dr. Nancy Holtje, and Stephanie Wright from Paterson Public Schools, Senator Nellie Pou, Paterson Police Chief Engelbert Ribeiro, Paterson's Public Safety Director Jerry Speziale, Undersheriff Kevin Dickson, and Real Housewives of New Jersey cast members Jennifer Aydin and Dolores Cantina. They were joined by volunteers from AvalonBay, Merrill Lynch, Spencer Savings Bank, Peapack-Gladstone Bank, the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency, State Farm, Cross River, Berkeley College, BD, Langan, PSEG, X-Caliber Capital, Altice, Reliable Benefits, and the Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park. We were also joined by the Paterson Fire Department, including Sparky the Fire Dog!

We celebrated Read Across America Day at both our Paterson Family Center Preschool (PFC) and the Community Charter School of Paterson (CCSP), the K-8 charter school founded by NJCDC in 2008. Volunteers were thrilled to read to all 105 three and four-year-old students at our award-winning preschool at 9 a.m. and more than 400 kindergarten through fourth-grade students at CCSP at 10 a.m.

Our volunteer readers truly got into the spirit of the celebration and worked hard to spread their love of reading to our young scholars and make it a day to remember. Many of our guests wore festive Dr. Seuss hats as they read their favorite childhood books (Dr. Seuss or otherwise) to our students. Each class at both schools was also joined by a very special guest—the Cat in the Hat, also known as NJCDC AmeriCorps member Priscilla Canales.

NJCDC Founder & CEO Bob Guarasci expressed his gratitude to our guests, sharing, "We are truly grateful to all of our readers for making Read Across America Day special for the children we serve. Thank you for your commitment to our young scholars and for promoting the joy of reading!
