Paterson Youth Council Member Accepted to Georgetown University

July 11, 2023

Established in 1789, Georgetown University is the oldest Catholic and Jesuit institution of higher learning in the nation—and one of the most sought-after. And for Maya Mohosin, getting accepted into Georgetown is one of her biggest accomplishments yet!

A senior in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program at International High School, Maya is also an active member of our Paterson Youth Council (PYC)—a leadership development program that introduces its members to topics ranging from education to public safety to the arts. Members also meet with city and county leaders to discuss topics that concern them; take trips to places like Washington, D.C.; and organize meaningful community service activities.

Maya explained, "I was recommended to the Paterson Youth Council by PYC alum and current UPenn student, Stefany Morales. Stefany credited the program for giving her a lot of the great skills that helped her get accepted to UPenn. She encouraged us to take advantage of PYC and take any opportunity that was given!

In addition to the PYC, Maya is also the president of her school's Student Government Association and Chinese Club. And it doesn't stop there! Maya has kept herself busy throughout high school, as she was involved in many other extracurricular activities, including being a member of the National Honors Society, serving as treasurer of First Robotics Competition Team 6860, and working as an intern at the 4Cs of Passaic County, where she helped low-income families obtain financial assistance. With this busy schedule, Maya still found time to volunteer at the Paterson Public Library.

However, it was her involvement at PYC that had the largest impact on her decision to attend Georgetown this fall. She said, "PYC has changed my life in the way that it has exposed me more to the overall community. Whereas before, I was restricted to friends and school." Maya continued, "Through the PYC experience, I was able to go on NJCDC trips to the nation's capital and the Ivy League Tour—all of which I would have never imagined going on my own. I didn't think I could get into some of the most elite colleges, but after touring them with the PYC, it changed my perspective and helped me realize my true potential."

It was a surreal moment for Maya when she discovered she was accepted into her dream school. She explained, "I had no idea that Georgetown was releasing their decisions that day until one hour before. I was currently at my IB Program's art exhibition and had to be excused to see if I got into Georgetown. And to my surprise when I opened the email it was as if my soul had left my body. I ran into the hallway screaming 'I got into Georgetown!' And all my friends and teachers joined me with excitement."

At Georgetown, Maya plans to major in Government and possibly double majoring in Justice and Peace studies. "I've always been passionate and great at history. I've loved history since freshman year. I am thankful to my history teachers Mr. Wirkmaa and Mr. Cohen for always encouraging me and helping me discover my passion for history," said Maya.

When asked what her plans are post-college, she stated, "I would like to continue my education and go to law school to be a general attorney. And hopefully, even receive an opportunity at Capitol Hill!"

Congratulations to Maya and the Paterson Youth Council Class of 2023!
