What began in 1994 with two employees, a modest AmeriCorps grant, and a vision for a stronger Paterson has grown into one of the city’s most impactful community organizations. Founded by Bob Guarasci and Rob Long, New Jersey Community Development Corporation (NJCDC) has invested more than $120 million in revitalizing Paterson’s Great Falls Neighborhood and now serves more than 4,000 children and families each day through its programs.

On Thursday, October 29, NJCDC welcomed 275 friends, partners, and community leaders to the Westmount Country Club in Woodland Park for our 32nd Anniversary Gala. The evening celebrated more than three decades of progress, honored extraordinary community partners, and gave voice to the people whose lives reflect NJCDC’s impact.

Looking Back, Pushing Forward

NJCDC Board Chair Martin Vergara welcomed guests and thanked the trustees, staff, and supporters who have sustained the organization’s mission. He highlighted NJCDC’s commitment to directing 92 cents of every donated dollar to programs and services, and expressed gratitude for the generosity and steadfast support that make NJCDC’s work possible.

Founder & CEO Bob Guarasci followed, reflecting on how far NJCDC has come and the work still ahead. “We don’t let up at NJCDC — we don’t take our foot off the gas,” Bob told guests, “because when all is said and done, none of us want to look back and say, ‘We could have done more.’ The stakes are way too high.”

His words captured the determination that has guided NJCDC for more than three decades — and the belief that its greatest achievements are measured in opportunities created and lives transformed.

Four Stories of What’s Possible

The evening’s most memorable moments came from four individuals whose stories showed what becomes possible when people receive the support they need to thrive.

Ashly Gaibor arrived in the United States at age 13, navigating a new language, unfamiliar surroundings, and negative perceptions of Paterson. After returning to the city during a difficult period for her family, she met NJCDC’s Cristina Tone, whose compassion inspired her to see her community — and herself — in a new light. She began volunteering with NJCDC, discovering a passion for service and a dream of becoming a lawyer to advocate for families in need. “You built more than an organization,” she told Bob. “You built a place where young people like me get to belong and become.”

For Celiness Correa, a resident of NJCDC’s Barclay Apartments, stable housing transformed her family’s life. After two years living with her children in a single room, she moved into a three-bedroom apartment that offered security, belonging, and the freedom to envision a brighter future. Today, she serves as a Youth Development Specialist, supporting hundreds of young people across Passaic County. “Sometimes, a home is more than a place to live,” she said. “It is where healing begins, where families find their footing, and where people rediscover the possibility of a better tomorrow.”

Vincent Cooper recounted a childhood marked by housing instability and years in foster care. When he aged out of foster care at 18, he faced adulthood without the basic skills to live independently. At NJCDC’s Independence House, dedicated staff provided the mentorship and practical training that helped him build a stable life. Vincent went on to become a postal worker, move into his own housing, and buy a car — milestones that once seemed out of reach.

Jason Ramos spoke candidly about rebuilding his life after experiencing housing instability. Just months earlier, he had been working part-time while staying with friends or in hotels when he could afford them, sometimes struggling to find somewhere safe to sleep. Through a local reentry program and NJCDC’s Financial Empowerment Center, Jason received help securing housing, opening a bank account, and accessing essential services. Now employed in sales and working toward financial stability, he shared his renewed optimism: “Things are turning around. I’m making better decisions, and feeling better about myself.”

Honoring Two Champions for Paterson

The celebration also honored two partners whose leadership and service are helping build a healthier, safer, and stronger Paterson.

Wellpoint was recognized for its commitment to expanding access to affordable, comprehensive healthcare and strengthening communities throughout New Jersey. Introducing the honoree, NJCDC Board Member Carline Morrison highlighted Wellpoint’s dedication to advancing equity, expanding resources, and creating lasting opportunities for families. Patrick Gillespie, Plan President for Wellpoint New Jersey, accepted the award on behalf of the organization.

The second honoree, Patrick Murray, Officer-in-Charge of the Paterson Police Department, was celebrated for more than four decades of service to his hometown. A lifelong Paterson resident, Murray joined the Department in 1985, following in his father’s footsteps. NJCDC’s Director of Community Outreach, Eddie Gonzalez, introduced Murray and recognized his leadership in reducing gun violence and strengthening collaboration between law enforcement and the community.

A Night of Music and Community

The gala was also a joyful celebration of the community behind NJCDC’s work. The Songbirds took the stage, joined by Paterson Mayor Andre Sayegh for a spirited rendition of “Sweet Caroline.” Guests enjoyed dinner, dessert, and musical favorites including “How Sweet It Is,” “This Will Be (An Everlasting Love),” “I Say a Little Prayer,” and “We Are Family.”

As the evening drew to a close, the stories shared throughout the night reminded everyone of what 32 years of sustained commitment can accomplish — and of the possibilities still ahead for Paterson and its people.
