From AmeriCorps Member to Honoree: A Journey of Service and Heart

The Paterson Alliance works to unite and empower nonprofits and community partners to create a stronger, more vibrant Paterson.  Founded in 1998 by five local nonprofits, the Alliance now includes more than 100 member organizations.

Each spring, the Paterson Alliance hosts the Extra Mile Awards to honor employees and volunteers who go above and beyond.  At this year’s ceremony, NJCDC’s Program Associate Mahbuba Uddin was recognized after being nominated by several of her colleagues.

A lifelong Patersonian and JFK High School alumna, Mahbuba first joined NJCDC as an AmeriCorps member before leading our Youth Arts program. She was later promoted to Program Associate, working alongside Chief Program Officer David Gelman.

As one of her nominators shared, “Whether she’s leading youth arts programming, designing centerpieces and balloon arches for events, or jumping in wherever help is needed, Mahbuba brings passion, creativity, and a deep commitment to the community we serve. Her impact is visible everywhere — from vibrant arches at events, to thoughtful and engaging art workshops for Paterson youth, to hand-crafted Gala centerpieces that wow our guests. But her contributions go far beyond what’s visible. Mahbuba is a true team player who eagerly says ‘yes’ when others need a hand and always brings positivity, resourcefulness, and heart to her work.”

Through her artistic vision, pride in her work, and unwavering dedication to NJCDC’s mission, Mahbuba helps make our programs more joyful, inclusive, and empowering for Paterson residents. She not only supports her colleagues and inspires the young people she works with — she enhances nearly every aspect of what we do.
