A New School Year, A New Chapter for Paterson’s Scholars and Leaders
September 12, 2025
As autumn arrives in Paterson, the familiar rhythm of a new school year brings fresh possibilities. At NJCDC, we believe education does more than teach facts and figures; it sparks curiosity, builds confidence, and helps every child envision a future full of promise. As the 2025–26 school year begins, we’re proud to welcome back Paterson’s next generation of scholars and leaders through our high-quality, no-cost programs that span pre-K through high school.
Building Strong Foundations: Paterson Family Center Preschool
The journey begins early at our Paterson Family Center (PFC) preschool, where we’ve been nurturing young minds since 2003. Here, education means more than ABCs and 123s; it’s about creating a safe, supportive environment where children develop socially, emotionally, and academically while their families receive vital support.
On September 4, our hallways came alive again as dedicated staff welcomed back classrooms filled with eager three- and four-year-olds. For our newest students, every corner held an adventure waiting to unfold. Meanwhile, returning four-year-olds bounded through the doors, racing to embrace teachers and reconnect with friends. Parents found guidance from our family workers, who connected them with resources to support their journey throughout the year.

“We are a family,” explains Ms. Elizabeth, a beloved PFC teacher. “We're not just teachers — we’re friends, moms, aunties. I want our students to leave with pride and a strong sense of belonging. I want them to believe in themselves and know in their hearts: ‘I can be anything.’”

Excellence in Action: Community Charter School of Paterson
What began as a bold vision 17 years ago has grown into one of Paterson’s educational success stories. Our Community Charter School of Paterson (CCSP), founded in 2008 with 400 students, now serves more than 900 K-8 scholars across two vibrant campuses, proving that academic excellence and deep community connections can go hand in hand.
This year’s excitement began before the first bell rang. On August 22, CCSP’s Welcome Back to School Celebration transformed the campus into a festival of learning, drawing hundreds of families. Scholars and their families delivered supplies to their new classrooms, registered for enrichment programs, and enjoyed games and refreshments while parents connected with teachers and staff.
When the first day arrived on August 27, staff members lined both campus entrances, creating a tunnel of encouragement for arriving students. The hallways quickly filled with laughter, vibrant displays, and the unmistakable energy of new beginnings.

“Every school year is a chance to reimagine what's possible for our scholars,” reflected CCSP CEO Ira Griffith. “Our focus remains on creating a community where every child is seen, supported, and inspired to reach higher than they ever thought possible.”
After School, Beyond Limits: Great Falls Youth Center
Since opening its doors in March 2018, our Great Falls Youth Center has become an essential sanctuary for Paterson’s high school students. What started as a modest program serving 20 students daily has exploded into a thriving hub for hundreds of teens, offering everything from tutoring and arts to sports and leadership development. The 2023 expansion addressed growing demand, and exciting plans are underway for a $12 million Great Falls Recreation Center — recently approved by the zoning board with a $2 million contribution from the City of Paterson.
The Youth Center partnered with JFK High School’s PTO to host an energetic Back to School BBQ on August 27. The celebration featured food, bouncy houses, games, and giveaways, while staff introduced families to this year's diverse offerings: boxing, music production, culinary arts, drumming, community service projects, and more.

Our Youth Center is having a profound impact on students who attend. For parents like Irene, the Youth Center has transformed her son's life. “It gave him a sense of belonging,” she shared. “He talks more, has more friends, and he’s happier overall. Just walking into the building, you can see his whole energy change. This place is family — it’s love.”
Community at the Core: Paterson Public School #5
Through NJCDC’s leadership of the Full Service Community Schools (FSCS) initiative, School #5 serves as a hub of learning and support for students and families. FSCS schools extend beyond academics by offering after-school enrichment, family workshops, and connections to social services.
The 2025-26 school year brought fresh leadership as School #5 welcomed two new administrators: Principal Richard Sanducci and Vice Principal Dr. Veronica Ricigliano. During spirited opening-day assemblies, students and parents met the leaders who will guide their school forward.
Mr. Sanducci brings three decades of Paterson education experience to his new role. “I've dedicated my career to helping young people succeed,” he said. “At School #5, I look forward to getting to know families personally and building on this school's tremendous strengths.”
Dr. Ricigliano, whose background spans inclusive practices and special education leadership, shared her inclusive vision: “I want every student here to feel this is their place. By working together, we can create an environment where all children thrive.”
Tomorrow's Leaders: Paterson Youth Council
Launched to give young people a direct voice in civic life, our Paterson Youth Council (PYC) empowers high school students to serve as leaders and advocates. Each year, members meet with elected officials, volunteer, and develop projects that address community needs.
The 2025-26 cohort launched their term with an overnight orientation at YMCA Camp Bernie in late August. Through ropes courses, archery, rock climbing, campfires, and leadership workshops, these emerging leaders forged bonds that will sustain them through their year of service.

As this new group takes on its responsibilities, they can draw inspiration from last year’s President, Adiba Rupa — now a first-year student at Montclair State University — who reflected earlier this summer: “Being part of NJCDC and the Paterson Youth Council helped me grow into the person I am today.”
Round-the-Clock Support: International High School Programs
NJCDC’s Teen Centers transform high schools into round-the-clock community resources, staying open late, on weekends, and throughout summer. At International High School, our Teen Center provides year-round enrichment designed to help students graduate and transition confidently to higher education or careers.
This fall kicked off with a dynamic Freshman Parent Welcome and Field Day, organized through our Full Service Community Schools program. While parents enjoyed a BBQ and learned about available support services, students participated in team-building games and icebreakers that sparked lasting friendships.
The event showcased the comprehensive resources available throughout the year: academic tutoring, bilingual family caseworkers, mental health counseling, enrichment programs, and partnerships with organizations like Planned Parenthood and our Compete for Life program.
The Road Ahead
From preschoolers taking tentative first steps in the classroom to high school seniors preparing for college and careers, NJCDC provides an unbroken pipeline of support that accompanies Paterson’s youth at every stage of their educational journey.

“Our city's future is written in the energy and potential of its students,” reflects NJCDC Founder & CEO Bob Guarasci. “As we begin this new school year, I have complete confidence that our young people will rise to meet every challenge with resilience and heart. Here’s to a year of learning, growth, and boundless opportunities for every child in Paterson.”
