Creativity in Full Bloom: NJCDC’s Summer Arts Program Kicks Off

This week, we kicked off our Youth Summer Arts Program — one of our most beloved summer initiatives — welcoming more than 60 Paterson students in grades K–5 for four weeks of artistic exploration, creative expression, and joyful community-building.

Each morning, students rotate through hands-on classes in dance, music, and visual art, all taught by local artists and vendors who bring their talent and passion to the classroom. The program, which runs Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., is completely free for families and culminates in a student-led showcase that highlights the incredible work created throughout the session.

While NJCDC’s Summer Arts Program has existed for over a decade, this marks the third year of its current iteration under the direction of Mahbuba Uddin — and it continues to be a hit, not just with the young artists who participate, but also with their parents and caregivers. So much so that, in response to overwhelming positive feedback, NJCDC expanded the program to reach even more families this summer.

“Our families were thrilled with the experience last year,” said Mahbuba Uddin, NJCDC Program Associate and Director of the Arts Program. “They told us how much it meant for their kids to have a space to express themselves creatively, stay active during the summer months, and connect with other children in a positive environment.”

A lifelong Patersonian and alumna of Passaic County Technical Institute, Mahbuba is no stranger to NJCDC. She began her journey with us as an AmeriCorps member and has since become a driving force behind our youth arts programming. This spring, she was honored by the Paterson Alliance with an Extra Mile Award in recognition of her unwavering commitment to young people and her colleagues.

“I’m proud to be part of a team that’s deeply rooted in and dedicated to Paterson,” said Mahbuba. “We’re not just keeping students busy over the summer — we’re helping them build confidence, explore their talents, and feel seen and celebrated. And I’m constantly inspired by Bob Guarasci’s vision for a city where every child has access to these kinds of life-changing opportunities.”

That vision is what drives programs like this one. As NJCDC Founder & CEO Bob Guarasci explains, “The arts are integral to healthy youth development. Studies show that when students — especially those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds — have access to arts education, they perform better in school, are more engaged in their communities, and are more likely to thrive as adults. That’s what we want for every young person in Paterson.”

Music instructor Tommy Barile, who has been part of the program since Mahbuba refashioned it three years ago, echoed that sentiment. “There’s something really powerful about watching a shy kid light up when they pick up an instrument or dance in front of their peers for the first time,” he said. “These moments matter — and I feel lucky to be part of a program that gives kids the space and encouragement to discover who they are.”

Whether students are crafting original paintings, learning choreography, or experimenting with rhythm and melody, the Summer Arts Program offers much more than a creative outlet — it’s a space where Paterson youth can feel supported, inspired, and proud of what they can achieve.

While the program is currently at capacity, families can still fill out this registration form to join the waiting list. And to hear more about Mahbuba’s journey and the impact of the Summer Arts Program, check out her recent appearance on The Loft, NJCDC’s official podcast.
